Tipo 1: Condizione passata β†’ Risultato presente

    Struttura: If + Past Perfect β†’ would/could + infinitive

"If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now."
(Non ho studiato medicina nel passato, quindi ora non sono medico)

Tipo 2: Condizione presente β†’ Risultato passato

    Struttura: If + Simple Past β†’ would/could + have + past participle

"If she spoke Italian, she would have understood the conversation."
(Non parla italiano, quindi non ha capito la conversazione di ieri)

    Conditionals Impliciti: Senza "If"

    Inversione

Elimina "if" e inverti soggetto e verbo

βœ“ "Should you need help, call me."
(= If you should need help...)

βœ“ "Were I younger, I'd travel more."
    (= If I were younger...)

    Otherwise/Or

    Condizioni implicite con conseguenze

βœ“ "Hurry up, otherwise you'll be late."
(= If you don't hurry up...)

βœ“ "Study hard, or you'll fail."
(= If you don't study hard...)

Conditionals con "Wish" e "If only"

    Errore Tipico degli Italiani

❌ "I wish I would have more time"
βœ“ "I wish I had more time" (present regret)
βœ“ "I wish I would have more time tomorrow" (future wish - solo con futuro)

    Present Regret

    Wish + Past Simple

"I wish I lived in Italy"

    Past Regret

    Wish + Past Perfect

"I wish I had studied harder"

    Complaints

    Wish + would

    "I wish you would listen"

Advanced: "As if" e "As though"

Queste strutture esprimono un confronto con situazioni irreali o ipotetiche:

    Unreality in the Present

βœ“ "He acts as if he were the boss." (ma non lo Γ¨)

βœ“ "She talks as though she knew everything." (ma non sa tutto)

βœ“ "You look as if you had seen a ghost." (aspetto attuale, causa passata)

    Reality Check

βœ“ "It looks as if it's going to rain." (probabilmente pioverΓ )

βœ“ "It sounds as though they're having fun." (probabilmente si stanno divertendo)

    🎯 Advanced Practice Tip

Create scenarios in your daily life and practice expressing them with different conditional structures. For example, think about one decision you made and express it using:

    • β€’ Mixed conditional: "If I hadn't moved to Bologna, I wouldn't speak Italian now."
    • β€’ Inversion: "Had I known about this course, I would have enrolled earlier."
    • β€’ Wish: "I wish I had started learning English sooner."
